Boosting Recruitment

Shelby Baldwin’s passion for working with other students made her an ideal match for MQABL’s new in-house internship in recruiting for the College of Business (COB).

A rising senior, Baldwin is director of New Maroon Camp 2018, a weeklong August experience to help first year students transition successfully to MSU.  Her engagement with other students on behalf of the University dates to her Freshman Forum days, when she served as a recruiter and counselor for the Zacharias Leadership Conference offered to high school juniors and seniors.  As a COB Student Ambassador, she enjoys working year-round with current, potential and former students.  She recently stepped up from Vice President of Marketing to President of MSU’s Undergraduate Women in Business chapter.  These experiences combined with her business education to the benefit of the COB’s recruitment program throughout the spring semester.

“I’ve been working on a lot of visual content,” says Baldwin, a Shackouls Honors College student.  “I’ve produced the campus visit presentation, developed email templates for events like orientation and Academic Insight, gathered information for brochures and other marketing materials and created social media graphics.”

Kelsey Waters, COB Assistant Director of Recruiting and Events, remarks, “I travel a lot, and I’ve been so comfortable knowing I could shoot Shelby a text and she would get things done.  She’s creative and understands how to make my ideas a reality.”

Waters joined the COB in July after recruiting for the University at large for six years.  She particularly appreciates the diversity an MSU business education offers.

“We help students figure out who they are and what they want to do,” she states.  “They have so many opportunities when they leave, whether it’s to pursue something that’s always been a passion or to discover something new that they love.”

COB recruiting took another step forward this year when a new “visit room” was made possible through the generous support of Renasant Bank.  No other academic unit boasts this type of space, where Waters and the Student Ambassadors welcome big groups of potential Bulldogs in a highly professional setting and make digital presentations about the College.

The additions of the new facility, new internship position and new leader are already paying dividends in increased interest among top students.  MQABL encourages its alumni and advocates to add to this success – from hosting events to identifying outstanding students.
